Hi
I’ve been using Blender for almost a year, though I’m exactly what you would call a pro yet :P. However, I want to try out making some kind of animated minimovie (like 30 seconds or so) with a look similar to Futurama (i.e. a cartoony look).
If I want to do animations Futurama-style, how would I do it? Which way is the best way to produce cartoony images?
When I tried using toon shaders and the edge option, the objects I rendered would get visible edges on all edges which I dont want. Is there a way to limit the edge rendering to only certain edges of an object?
Combining shadeless materials on some objects with toon shading on other objects will probably give you a good start. Another good option is the nodes compositor. You can get advanced control over the look of your images with the nodes that you just can’t get any other way in Blender.
Edit: some guy posted a method on here for precisely controlling the width of your edges with the nodes. But you’re probably not in danger of being able to spot control your images like you’re wanting just yet. You can control your toon shading to a great extent with your lighting setup but I don’t really go to that shader very often. See my post here on node based light rigging:

Working with the nodes and render layers is the absolute best way to achieve localized control over your renders in Blender.
