Blender Colour Correction Tips.

You don’t send vse to nodes it’s the other way around. So interlaced source have to come from textures. Then rendering interlace out can still have issues and blur doesn’t work correctly as it renders for a frame not a field. Oh well.

Hey harwluk

Thanks alot. I’m glad you’re able to find use for the blender colour correction abilities. They’ve improved with blender 2.5 to quite a degree in terms of efficiency. I have many ways/techniques of going about colour correction in blender, ways to make things more efficient, faster vignettes, better masking, more effective tools, better layout etc.

If you require assistance or would like to know anything in relation to what I’ve said let me know…
I’m checking out your Darklings page in a sec… Goodluck for your feature film project…

What programs do you use currently?

Thanks.

Sirius Black.

Hey Sirius, what do you do for animated mask shapes for vignettes etc in Blender?

I can only find presets. Where can I download the color balance node? not forking out 200 for colorista

Hey Sirius, what do you do for animated mask shapes for vignettes etc in Blender?

Hey 3pointEdit… Well for actual animated shapes you could use the 3D view with a bezier (and its alpha) if you want greater control - although it isn’t supremely efficient for quick use. If you have Syntheyes, you could mask anything as fast as any program in there, if not better, then just export the alpha matte to blender, that’s what I do for rotoscoping, but maybe you just want a quick simple vignette. So in ONLY the compositor what I like to do for quick vignettes is: Add a Math node (set it to less than/or greater than = 0 or any number where the output is just white - hopefully you know what I mean by that?), then add a Lens Distortion node after it (set it to distort in the positive direction ->), then add a blur node (click relative, put Gauss or Fast Guass or whatever and set it to whatever blurs the mask enough).
From that point on you have a blurred mask for a vignette in 3 nodes. Of course at that point you know what to do. (put it through Set Alpha->Alpha Convert, with the original image…or however you go about masking/vignetting)…

Thoughts??

Download, a version of Blender 2.5 at Graphicall.Org for your computer. That has Hue Curves, the Colour Balance Node, and some other great updates including, Colour Correction Scopes of all kinds just in the UVImageEditor for easier use, and easier use of Colour/Greenscreen Keying/Colour Suppression tools.

Ah, have 2.5 just didn’y know it had the nodes. Happy days and cheers

Sirius Black, thanks for that, Would it be cool if you could add basic node groups to your startup file like addon settings. It would eliminate rebuilding stuff or linking all the time. I guess you could hack the stratup blend to include a bunch of stuff like that in a pre-built node window.

Sirius,
I don’t quite understand how you use the color of a selection to create a vignette. I’ve experimented with this but was unable to get it to work. Will you please elaborate?
If anyone else out there has any suggestions on this please share.
Thanx in advance.

I think he means using the chroma key / diff matte etc to get a selection, not for vignettes.

There are two ways I know of to generate vignettes, using nodes to generate a shape then the usual lens distortion, blur whatever combi or bezier, or circle or some such other shape, even roto’d, (done that to get a out of focus background to a video shot) under a ortho camera, then add them as scenes to the VSE or pre render if the scenes stuff dosen’t work for you.

I have seen such examples used for e.g. recoloring an object in post but I couldn’t think that it could be used for vignetting. I found the idea very intriguing as it could be a huge time saver.

I’ve decided to shoot vignettes on a separate layer of 3d view. I have a couple simple shapes to swap in or out. They can have simple moves keyed to that same scene.

Hi everyone. This is an interesting thread, thanks for the books and tricks.

I have two similar ways to generate vigneting.

One with beziers in the 3dView. Create a circle bezier and enter edit mode. Move vertexs to fit your grading zone. Then select a vertex and press Ctrl-H to make a hook in each vertex you want to animate. Then go object mode and animate the emptys. With an empty parented to all others you can rough mask easily. Render the mask with the openGL render button in the viewport to speed up the process and feed the result into the compositor nodes.

And for simple vignette i have a folder with a lot of jpeg masks. One of them is a circle made in gimp. I feed it into nodes and then a distort scale node, blur and go. I think it’s faster for the compositor to render this than the Lens distorsion node. And i think you can also simple animate scale ,translate, and rotate nodes

Also to solve some complains about VSE i’m working in a script you may want to see.

http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?p=1728425#post1728425

Also this way allows use of a 25% / 50% proxy version of your vignette image until final render / encode out. Speeds up performance on multi layered VSE work, where there is a substantial slow down using full resolution strips.

Yeah I wish there was a re-use renders setting, like with After Effects, there it only updates a generated image if there is a change to it. My way requires re-rendering the camera output of the 3D scene, but I haven’t tried it with GLSL render on. And Carlos’s script looks like a winner, I hope he gets some help with bugs and integration.

i made a simple vignette generator in a .blend file

You can add the vignettes folder to bookmarks in the open file menu. It’s like AE, better than colorista :stuck_out_tongue:

hahaha, Carlos thats EXACTLY what I did! Thanks for putting it up for evryone else though, I was going to write a tut for it but thats easier. The best part is that you can animate the vignette shape (scale movement etc.) all via the mouse, rather than from a translate node etc.

Hi Guys…

Sorry for the super late reply…

I wasn’t receiving any notifications about this thread so I didn’t know it was still going on.

That’s an awesome vignette script Carlos… that’s great. And all the ideas you guys have are awesome.

I’m going to be bringing out a tutorial shortly (there’ll be many parts to it)…Hopefully just after the new year, I’m sure it’ll be announced on BlenderNation. It’ll be about advanced colour correction and professional compositing fundamentals in blender - and the most efficient ways that I know are possible to do things.
And there’ll be a whole bunch which will be free extended tuts (about vignettes etc)…and hopefully it can benefit anyone interested.

Thanks gang.

Hey Sirius will you be recomending the new animated curves addon in that tut? Its a great addition to colour correction tools.

Hey there…

Yes. Most definately. They are a total step up from the previous use of hooks or other cumbersome methods.

I’ll do a post when I’ve finished the free extended tuts on vignettes and stuff (hopefully like at least 10 mins each). And anything else that I can think would be a good topic to delve into before I do the longer proper tuts series.

Sirius, I’ll be looking forward to your tutorial!
