Blender crashes on launch with shader errors on Windows 10

I installed Windows 10 a few months ago on an old computer, and Blender doesn’t run. It crashes on launch with some shader errors I don’t know anything about.

My GPU is an NVidia GeForce GTX 960. I’ve just installed the latest drivers to be sure, and the problem still persists.

My CPU is an old Intel Cored Duo, which doesn’t support SSE4, but I tried running older versions, like 4.1, 3.6 LTS, and 2.92. All of them crash with very similar errors.

It’s important to note that 2.92 is the version I was running on this same hardware under Windows 7. So it runs fine on 7 but not on 10, and I guess this rules out the hardware as the issue.

Please make sure there are no problems with the hardware, remove the GPU driver and try reinstalling it.
If there is a problem with all versions, it seems to be a hardware or driver problem.

Your GPU shaders can’t compile. This is a combination of hardware and OS; Windows 10 is using a version of DirectX that your hardware doesn’t support. You can downgrade to Windows 7 or upgrade your hardware

If you did not install Windows 10 as a reinstallation but updated it to Windows 10, you will need to reinstall all drivers and update the hardware.

You may need driver updates and bios updates from your hardware manufacturer.

In the case of GPUs, it is necessary to uninstall and reinstall the existing driver unconditionally.
In particular, you should not use the default drivers installed by Widow.

Well, Blender is really the only thing not working so far (except 2.79). Maybe because no one else uses DirectX. I can run Silo, BlockBench, Wings3D, Dust3D. I’ve been using the Godot engine too, but that uses Vulkan and OpenGL. I don’t play any modern games, but all the ones I do are running fine.

I don’t know an application that uses DirectX that I could test.

Also, is there some way to know for sure if my GPU really supports DirectX 12? All seems fine in dxdiag, but I don’t know if that’s enough to know.

This is a fresh install of Windows 10. The driver I was using was the latest when I installed windows, and I only installed the current latest to see if it would make a difference.

Ancient version of blender running on very old hardware, and all of this is end of life.

You need to either go back to using the blender (2.92) that worked on the operating system that worked (win7) , or decide that this old computer and set up has outlived usefulness.

Have you tried downloading legacy DirectX libraries? They’re available here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35
I don’t know if Blender will use them automatically or if you’ll have to run with compatibility settings.

There were also some info about minimal requirements for windows 10, which also changed over time; at firs only:

Processor: 1GHz or faster CPU or System on a Chip (SoC).

But then also showing not (!) the older Core or DualCore anymore:

So yes… you might stick with window 7 or may use some linux… or even invest into windows 11… ??

Does Blender even use DirectX? It’s not even mentioned in the requirements. I’m not sure what to think.

I just found out even Blender 2.79 is having issues. It doesn’t highlight selected faces. That one also worked 100% fine in this hardware under Windows 7.

When I went through the verification Nvidia 960 driver update, the last update was September 2021. (Driver version 472.12)
If it’s not a very latest blender, it should work without any problems.

We don’t know what’s wrong with your window.
That’s why you have to work hard to solve this problem.

Well, I have to ask questions whenever there’s something I don’t understand. I’ve been considering the suggestion of downgrading DirectX, if possible. But since DirectX isn’t even mentioned in Blender’s system requirements, then naturally I’m questioning whether I should waste time worrying about that at all.

Meanwhile I’m also gonna use DDU and reinstall my drivers clean just to be 100% sure.

Nothing supports windows 7 anymore, so it’s really not an option at all. And besides, I’ve mentioned from the start that I migrated to this windows with zero apparent issues, until I installed Blender. Blender is the only thing not running properly in this system, so it’s not really like I have any reason to go back to Windows 7.

Off the top of my head, I’ve installed and ran Silo, BlockBench, Wings3D, played some games, been using the Godot engine, Raylib and Love2d, and I had no issues with anything so far.

Your hardware does, which I believe is the key part of your issue. I did some reading last night on your hardware, and the TLDR of using Windows 10 on it was “possible, but don’t expect much more than light use, such as email and basic internet browsing. “

(I’m not really surprised that Silo and Wings work on it, because I don’t think their code has changed much since 2005 in the first place.)
