I’m back again and beyond frustrated. Now, before my texture paint didn’t save because I didn’t know I had to save it via the Image - Save option (so stupid). I’ve been working in my file, I finally got it all finished again. Every time I went to view the Render, I had to save the texture painting. There is no way my texture paint wasn’t saved. I saved the entire project and closed it. I opened it today to add the trees I’d made to the project and everything is gone all over again. I’m back to where I was a few days ago, a little bit of paint on the object and that’s it with no way to recover what I did a few days ago. What in the hell is going on with this damn program and texture painting?! I’ve never had so much trouble with something like this and I’ve worked in a lot of various 3d softwares.
Do you have your saved image plugged into your material slot?
Yes. The issue isn’t the lack of material now, it’s the fact that it hasn’t saved any changes I made the last time I edited the texture, even though I had to save it to view the render.
Try this tutorial to see where you gone wrong(At-2.20 minutes):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjS_zNQNVlw
Hmmm… I hate starting out like this, but this is the first time I have seen this reported…plenty of “I didn’t know I had to save the texture”
I believe, that you have been saving the texture…Losing some project ONCE due to not saving seems to drive that home…so I has to be something else in your set-up or saved files that are going south…so let me ask you a couple of questions…
-
Are you changing the name of the Texture file on each save, or appending a version number so you know which is the last file…?
-
Are you saving to a specific location ( Save As) or just hitting save…?
I don’t quite understand this as there is nothing stopping you from viewing a render without saving an image first…? The image is in Memory, that’s why it has to be saved…The render is labeled as such…so after render and you open the drop-down you should see Your Paint file as well as the Render Result…

the render is in the tmp dir by default as well as a ton of your Blend Files…I just cleaned mine out as there were several gigs of files in there…
So is any of this not happening, or working in some odd, different way…besides the current probe of course…
I did exactly what it said to do in this tutorial. Nothing in this video is new to me.
So, I lost the project once because I didn’t know the save system was different to other programs I’ve used, sucks but it happens. Second time I haven’t lost everything, I’ve lost all the edits I made, which includes all the texture painting for that day, not all the texture painting I’ve done. The file is still there, all the edits I’ve made outside of the texture paint are still there in the file, but the image itself doesn’t seem to have any edits saved on it. The file is in My Documents - Blender, a folder I made. I’ve not changed the name or done a Save As since I made the original file. The first thing I checked was the folder to see if there was a second image in there. There are only two textures in it, the two I’ve been working on, the map and the tree.
I don’t know why I have to save it every time I want to view the edits in the render, but I have to do it to view any of the changes I make to the texture. I don’t know why, this isn’t my computer, this is a fresh install of Blender on a friends new built PC.
The only temp file I could find was a grey image of the file I was working on from before New Years, I’ve been working on this file daily, no textures visible, there wasn’t even a temp file for the tree I texture painted today and I was rendering it as I worked.
This is Blender 3.4 on Windows 11. I haven’t actually saved any of the renders, just viewed them.
Try this:
This is something that’s allegedly being fixed with the big texture workflow update, is it not?
To view the edits, you have to save the image…is a big red flag for me, since the texture is in Memory all edits are visible as you make the changes. There is something wrong somewhere that is making a circular reference to the texture so that it has to be re-loaded for the changes to appear but should not have anything to do with a render… you don’t happen to have the texture in the compositor to make any other changes, do you? That could cause a render of the texture before viewing…
Or it could be something within Win11 that is causing problems…I know nothing about Win 11 as I will not be able to use it on my CPU.
I’m testing it now. I drew a line on the texture, saved and pressed F12, it showed the random line. I drew another line, didn’t save it and nothing. It’s not showing in the render.
I don’t know what it is, could be this version of Blender, could be Windows 11 or it could even be that this is an AMD build, not an Intel/nVidia. I really just want to know why the hell my saved texture from the other reverted itself back to a version from days ago, even though it was saved over multiple times. I know it was, I checked the file myself before I closed the project just to make sure it was 100% saved.
When you save your file, your image doesn’t save. It has nothing to do with AMD or Windows, it’s a known problem in Blender dating back to the dinosaurs. This:
will fix it
-
Blender file with packed image and also external data automatically packed… the it is in the file…
-
Blender file only… Image as extern image file… on exit Blender says someting like: There are n unsaved images…
I know this. I am saving the image via the Image - Save, and I have been checking the .png file to make sure the texture was saving. The issue is that for some crazy reason, my png file reverted to an old save when Blender was closed. This is not me being stupid and not saving the texture image. I have to save it to view the changes in the render and have done since I started saving the image properly.
I know how to save the texture, and I have also been checking the .png file just to make sure it was saved. The issue is that it reverted back to an older save when I exited Blender. Something is very wrong with the texture paint option.
I’ve not imported my file into Nomad and I’m now texture painting it in Procreate on my iPad because I can’t deal with Blender screwing this up all over again. I only have access to this PC for a couple more days then I’m heading home and back to working on an old gaming laptop where I can’t use Cycles at all.
You saved the texture (for example) as PNG… and blender changed it while saving into an older version ?? Are you sure the old images is’t packed and you didn’t enabled Automatically Pack Resources ???
I have no idea how to do that. I’m using a fresh install of Blender, haven’t messed with the settings apart from to add the add on images as planes add on.
It sure seems like you saved somewhere else on accident and didn’t save the blend file, so when you re-opened, it opened the older image file.
Perhaps there’s a third party here that’s messing with files, I’m talking about file sync programs like Google Drive, Dropbox, Cloud Drive, etc. If you’re putting files in a folder managed by one of these, perhaps try elsewhere on just a hard drive and see if the issue continues. Check the app and see if there have been any collision notifications regarding this file too, if it hasn’t been too long.
There is no google drive, no Dropbox, no cloud drive on this machine. It’s actually a huge pain in the ass, but it’s not my PC. It hasn’t saved anywhere else, I searched the drive for the file, nothing.
I have no idea where it could have gone. Blender is only saving to the file I’m saving to in my documents. It’s a very, very confusing issue. There’s nothing in the console either. I’ve just switched to my iPad, Nomad and Procreate. Luckily the file is small enough the iPad can handle it. I only have a base model so it’s impossible to work on files sometimes.
You know that is very possible…
- You have a texture in the file, it is also in the material
- You do changes and render, save the image…
- You close Blender or just start a new file
- You open your file…and toss the monitor across the room as the texture is displaying an old one…All that sound about right?
It will do that…for a simple reason… you didn’t change the texture or re-load it into the material…it should if you just continue to change it and save over the file…but if the images were packed into the Blend…whether you did it or it did it…I have done it as Ctrl + S…is a save file shortcut…and I didn’t notice it had been saved…then it would pull, not the new one on disk, but the one packed into the Blend File…
To stop all this…Make a folder and save the Blend file to it…
Go to File > External Data > Unpack Resources
It will show if they are all packed into the blend I believe a dialogue opens for where to unpack etc…if they weren’t packed into the Blend it will say so…on the bottom bar…
Let’s assume they weren’t packed.
Take the Texture make a small change to it and
Save it as… AAA-BBB-CCC.png <<<<<Name it that!
Change the texture reference in the Materials also…Re-Load the image from the disk to the Image Texture Node…
Save the Blend file as AAA-BBB-CCC.blend in the same folder as the texture.
Close Blender…
Open Blender…go to File > Defaults > Load Factory Settings
Open your File
Is the texture the last Change?
