Blender hair curves are rendering as "tubes" not as hair

Blender hair curves are rendering as “tubes” not as hair. Even when I try converting to the old particle system the hair still render as tubes. Am I doing something wrong?

Try to reduce your Diameter Root value under Hair Shape tab to something like 0.1m

It seems to have worked when I converted to particle system and decreased the diameter root.

but it is still weird to me that when I use empty hair curves they are being rendered as tubes. I just tried creating a new empty hair curve on Suzane and still got similar results. It is weird that when I try rendering in Eevee it looks more like hair than in Cycles.

For Cycles use Strip instead of Strand
