Blender Importer help!! Basics..

Hello, I’m new to Blender but not new to 3d.
I figure I’d give it a try since I hear ppl I know using it sometimes for character renders. Anyways I’m working on a simple project but I’m trying to import parts of my character that have both hard and soft vertex normals.

My issue is no matter what format I try to import into Blender v2.69 there is a problem with the model.
I’ve tried 3d max 2010 x64 exporting as the following and the result.

FBX (model doesn’t even show up)
OBJ (model has no split vertex or hard normals, all smoothed)
3ds (Model has no split vertex or hard normals, all smoothed)
Stl (Model as no soften normals, all hard)
dae (Model doesn’t even show up)

I’ve tried Maya 2012 and had the following as a result.

FBX (Model has soft and hard normals which is great, but UV’s are completely wiped.)
OBJ (Model has no soft normals everything is hard)
dae (Model doesn’t even show up)

Now I’ve been trying settings for each of these for hours and honestly this isn’t a very good first impression.
Is there a missed method of importing or is this a huge failure at mesh translation because to me this is fundamental. =/
