Blender Layering: Please Help

I recently downloaded the Blender animation program and am attempting to make my way through the tutorial section. The problem is the objects in object mode won’t move from one layer to another, (I have specifically grabbed them as instructed too) the number keys don’t change the perspective, and sometimes it says that it has failed to boot up when it has been on screen for a while.

I’m running version 2.5, (there are no tutorials I can use for the 2.6. version) and I have checked that my laptop works in other areas, (such as with typing and playing games) so I don’t think the problem is the computer. Anyone else have this same problem, and can I fix it?

Hey wildcard, I remember this thread somewhere !!

I don’t know if you objects are linked to other objects, meshes or layers etc… is object selectable in the outliner pabel? Does it happen in new blendfiles as well? Check in user preferences -editing if global undo is checked…

Well all my preferences are set on the default. I know it happens in every new Blendfile. I’m trying to transfer a few objects from one layer to another and it isn’t transferring. To link an object don’t you just need to highlight said object and click on another layer, (or maybe activate it before with Shift+Alt I’m not sure) and then it will “drag” to that layer? That is how it says to do it on all the tutorials I’ve seen.

Thank you I’ll try to look at the user preferences. I don’t know what the Outliner pabel is though.

Okay, I just checked Global Undo is on. Does this help?

Your laptop doesn’t have a ‘numpad’ right, if so goto user preferences > input > and check ‘emulate numpad’ button.
To move an object to another layer select the object in object mode first then hit ‘m’ a popup will appear on screen then select the layer you want to move it to.

Happy blending

Thank you for telling me about the Number Pad thing that did help. Unfortunately it still didn’t work. Whenever I press M the popup appears for a second and then a layer menu goes to the right side of the screen. Whenever I select an object, (with the right mouse key. That is the only way I know how to grab it) and click on the layer I want all it does is show me everything but the object I grabbed in that other layer.

lol the outline PABEL is the same as the outline PANEL. its usually on your top right. moving object by using the keyboard only does work normally. use the keyboardnumberkeys not the numpad ones (you don’t seem to have anyway ;s)
