First work posted here (finally a piece which make me proud of it :o).
I just started it as a doodle, but its resemblance with one of my favourite Simpsons character lead me to improve topology and to play with particle system.
It was very very funny!
Few hours on particle system man :D:D:D
I used most part of this time to understand how hair system works and to make some test on children generation and effects which you can apply.
Hair type with children particles enabled and braid effect worked fine so I decided to tweak a little by hand using (the amazing) particle mode to adjust single dreadlocks pose, length etc.
Finally rendered with strands with a simple shader+color ramps.
Came so close to being my new background, but quite fond of the xkcd comic I’ve got. Very nice work!
I was wondering why he doesn’t look ‘evil’ enough although it is an interesting facial expression. Hope you don’t mind, I had a bit of a play in Photoshop. Tweaked the brow and mouth shape a little and he seemed slightly cross eyed.
Anyway, take what suggestions you like, it is a very nice piece. Well done!
You’re totally right BenDansie. Indeed he has a bad nice-guy looking smile.
I’ll follow your suggestions and I’ll try to add some particular on pose/background too.
Suggestions and critics like these are very very very appreciated and needed.
I hope entire community can help me grow up and improve my skills.
I think this is one of the best 3D versions of any Simpsons character I’ve seen. He clearly looks 3D, yet you managed to keep him in enough style. Great job.
I think I prefer the first version more, I think the expression in the first is enigmatic, the viewer has to engage and make some effort to read the expression and is therefore required to “engage” with the piece…
The second is less complex, the smile , though not with the eyes: obviously insincere, the threat of the hidden weapon…
