Blender render

Hello everybody,

A lot of people say that you can create realistic looking images with cycles. But I know some effects like volumetrics can not yet be rendered with cycles. Altough I know it is possible to composite volumetrics from blender render into cycles i just want to see what s still possible with only blender render and realistic looking images.

The reason Cycles is more “realistic” is because of global illumination, which BI does not have. It’s not necessarily the render engine, it’s about knowing how to light.
Here’s a comparison between BI, YafaRay, and Cycles, same scene in each (BI = direct lighting, no global illumination, YafaRay = global illumination, and Cycles = global illumination, in his examples):

Obviously not much of a difference between each render, but he knows what he is doing. He did composite each picture, but 98% of all “realistic” pictures are run through a compositor or Photoshop/GIMP at least a bit anyway.
If realistic BI renders are what you are looking for, go to blender.org and look in the gallery just as Richard Marklew said.
This guy does some cool stuff in BI too: http://tutorialfield.blogspot.com/2011/12/blender-26-internal-render-interior.html
This guy shows how to mimic Vray with BI: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wVYwKxT0Cs
I hope this is what you were asking

EDIT: I should have said the last guy was trying to mimic global illumination in BI, not necessarily Vray, but the original picture he is trying to copy was indeed rendered in Vray.

First URL is a access denied for me. But I understand what you are trying to explain. With good lighting setup you get a fair bit of the job done. I just read a quick explanation on global illumination. Creation of good caustics is this done by good lighting or is this really a job which the render engine takes care of.

@ROTAERC: I’m sorry, here is the full article: http://blendernews.org/xe/?mid=Feature_Articles&document_srl=1274 You can enlarge the picture down the page  As for caustics, more often than not they are achieved by GI, but I’ve done them in YafaRay’s direct lighting also. I’ve seen it faked quite effectively in BI before as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIT1g_LMd3E I’m not the one to explain that one, I’ll leave that up to the experts
