"Blocky" render?

Hi. I was wondering if somebody could help. I’m trying to render a scene but the render output is quite “blocky”. Not sure how else to describe it.

The “blocks” correspond to the tile size in the performance section. It automatically sets to 240x216 but even if I lower the value down 16x16 the same blockiness is there (only 16x16 blocks for example.)

I’m not sure how to get rid of this.

Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks for the help!

Please give us some more information about other rendering settings: which renderer you are using, are you using denoising (I bet you do), how many light samples etc.

My guess is that you have not enough samples for the denoiser to smooth the image correctly. Try disabling denoising (If you have it enabled) and see if the render still looks blocky (regardless of overral image quality).

I do have denoiser turned on. I just tried loading the scene in Blender 3.0 alpha with k-cycles (I was using normal cycles with 2.93.5) and the artifacts do not appear there so I will just use Blender 3 with k-cycles moving forward.

Thank you for your help.

Are you using CPU and GPU to render? I was having this issue as well, I had to turn off CPU rendering and just use GPU, and it fixed it.

Try the 2.93.6 release candidate as it might well have been fixed:

Blender Builds - blender.org

If that doesn’t fix it then if you’re able to share the scene it might be worth putting in a bug report for it for 2.93.5.

I was, yes. Disabling CPU rendering did seem to fix the issue.

I wonder if it’s related to the fact that my Ryzen CPU can’t do Optix denoising? (That option was checked.)
