Bullet Trails

I want to make bullet trails in Blender and was wondering how I could make an object distort the background to look “matrixy”. Any help is appreciated.

you could use the displace node.
or create a material with refraction completely transparent and that do not cast shadows.

Here is a simple setup. I made it very quick, so you need to tweak things a lot more.

Basic steps:

  1. Add a cylinder and a curve.
  2. Add an array modifier and a curve modifier to the cylinder.
  3. Add hooks to the curve handles and keys to the hook empties.
  4. Edit the IPO-curve to make the trail follow the bullet.
  5. Add a displace modifier to the trail.
