My first attempt at making a cartoon character… questions? comments? snide remarks?
I think that the ears look too flat, and the grass texture kind of clashes with the cartoon look of the picture, so don’t bother pointing that out (it’s okay to agree with me, though :))
Not bad. I take it the head and body, etc, are some kind of sphere primitives? If so, it might be a worthwhile challenge to try to model the same character out of a single cube. Once you can do that, you’re well on your way.
Any tips on modelling the entire character from a cube? does it involve using a lattice to warp the shape of it?
No, nothing like that, just basic modeling. It doesn’t have to start with a cube, necessarily, I just mean modeling your shape with a single mesh.
I’d recommend you start with the video tutorial “bathtub and bishop” on Greybeard’s vid tuts site:
This video tutorial will get you started with a lot of the basic modeling techniques you’d need.
Once you’re confident with the stuff in that video, you might want to take a stab at a more advanced modeling tut. This is more than you need for the bunny, but it’s great practice, and one of the best character box-modeling tutorials I know of on the web:
(Unfortunately, this tutorial is originally for 3DS Max, so you need to be creative in the places where it uses 5 sided polygons. Mostly, they are only used temporarily, so you can leave the area blank until the situation is resolved later in the tutorial…)
