Bust

Hi people, this is my first attempt for sculpting something in Blender, I didn’t use image references to oblige my brain to be “creative”, but I think it’s acceptable taking in consideration I am not an artist and having less than a month in this of the 3D stuff.

Btw it was rendered in Cycles, like my previous renders.

Edit: I corrected what people suggested, moved the eyes forward, made the ears smaller, and also put some “love” to the stand (but not much), also removed the background image, did some proper illumination and retouched the forehead and the hair, the rest is the same.

BTW. I am aware the lips need some detail, but I am gonna leave them as they are, render times are much annoying than correcting details.

First render

hi, for a first bust it is really nice. some things to watch out next time : eye balls are “balls”, so not flat. you can take a sphere and insert it, and model the eyelids around it. this way, you get perfect roundness… ears also are too flat against head. lift the ear rim off the skull somewhat, from backside it looks like an s curve …
and, reference is a good thing ! and, you can be very creative with looking at reference : you can choose different images for different features of the head, and assemble them into your bust as imagine it should look. the advantage is, you get the basic shapes correct. after that, you have a solid foundation, and you always can change this now at will to your creative liking… just to consider…

for a month you achieved a lot, learning a 3d-tool alone is a huge task. well done !

Very nice first try!
It looks like you’re a talented artist. So, go go.
Presentation isn’t great though. Better have a look on sculpture books. Some great ideas there. Lighting, environment, and most of all some kind of unwritten script, hidden in the background of your imagination.
I strongly recommend you to get involved in the new experimental dynamic topology branch. If not already. The same recommendation goes to doris as well. LOL (repeating myself)

Doris: About the eyes I did exactly what you mention, I did spheres and inserted them into the model, maybe because the material I used, made them look flat; about the rest you comment I plan starting using references for modeling things, this attempt was more like a test to challenge myself doing somewhat acceptable

Michalis: Man about the lights, I committed the mistake of using a HDRI image as background, and that took the light control away from me, even tough I tried to tweak it the best I could; about the environment, well yeah I was cheap on that; btw, what is that topology branch you are talking about?, I am using the official Blender 2.64 RC-2, does it include that feature?.

Thanks for commenting, and the encouragement :).

Looks blocky around the chest area. And the eyeballs look flat (Like everyone said)
The stand the statue’s on looks unloved. Like you spent more time on the statue instead of the stand.
Otherwise, it’s okay.

oh, i see. … so i looked again, i think your eyeballs look so flat not because of material, but the balls are too big and too far back in head, so we can see only a small portion of the sphere, and thus it looks flat, like the earth it looks flat since we only see a small part at a time… i recomment to look at anatomy book to see how the correct size of an eyball is…

Michalis: I did a test with the branch you told me, and it’s awesome, lot of problems I pass through would have been easily solved with this, count me in the club :).

McThingy: I think the chest blockiness problem was because the light, in the model looks good, I don’t plan using HDRI images for lighting again in a near future (until I learn to properly illuminate with it); about the stand, well yeah just like the environment, I was cheap in that.

Doris: I think you are right about the eyes position, I will be careful about that next time.

Ok, people I corrected some details you pointed at, see main post to see the update.

Much better now. Good work.
