Buying a new laptop, need help making the right choice

After spending sometime looking up various laptop deals and performance, I have finally narrowed down my options to about 5 laptop brands, problem is, I don’t really know which is the best for my plans of mastering modelling and rendering on blender

Here are my selections so far. I need your suggestions on which would be best. I am looking at performance and long term use (i plan to get atleast 2 or 3years from the laptop before upgrading)

Legion 5 Gen 7 AMD (15”) with RTX 3060

Any of those seem fine to me, specs wise. The most important thing in blender is having an NVidia RTX, which all of those have covered, the bigger the better, so I would ignore that first lenovo.

After that you are looking for build quality and durability. Both of those brands are decent quality, so I’m not sure you can really go wrong.

Thanks for replying, so as long as the laptop has a NVIDIA RTX its good to work with blender?

Cpu and ram matter too, of course, but all of the models you listed would work just fine.

Are gigabyte laptops good or do i go for Lenovo

It seems like gigabyte has lower build quality than lenovo, so go for a lenovo model.

if a laptop has NVIDIA RTX and AMD ryzen instead of Intel, would it still work with Blender?

Yep! My computer has a RTX 3070 and an AMD Ryzen 5950, works great for Blender

@SterlingRoth @joseph revisiting this thread as I didn’t think I had to create a new one, so I have been waiting for black friday to come around before making a purchase and I found this Lenovo https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/laptops/legion-laptops/legion-5-series/legion-5-gen-7-(15-inch-amd)/82rd000yus (AMD Ryzen™ 7 6800H Processor (3.20 GHz up to 4.70 GHz)

Windows 11 Home 64, Graphics NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX™ 3070 Ti Laptop GPU 8GB GDDR6 , Memory 16 GB DDR5-4800MHz (SODIMM) (2 x 8 GB), Storage 1 TB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 TLC , Display 15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080), IPS, Anti-Glare, Non-Touch, 100%sRGB, 300 nits, 165Hz, LED Backlight, Narrow Bezel)

My concern is that its AMD and not Intel. Would this be perfect for learning Blender and making my own models and rendering? I feel like I’ve been on the sideline with this blender thing for too long and I just want to get started BUT I need a laptop that’s close to perfect, something good enough to get the job done. Is this powerful enough?

Nothing wrong with AMD, I use an AMD CPU myself. They work great with Blender.

That said, this laptop doesn’t have enough RAM for Blender. You want at least 32 GB

Thanks for replying, For laptops like the one I posted, can the RAM be increased and would that be the way to go? Also do you know any upcoming black Friday deals that would present the opportunity of getting a quality laptop at a reasonable price?

Laptop RAM is very often time hard soldered in, can’t be replaced or upgraded. There are exceptions, but even in those cases, you can’t replace m it yourself, you have to take it to a computer repair shop where they have the tools to do it. This is another reason not to get a laptop- if your RAM gets corrupted, you have to throw the whole thing away or pay a lot of money to have a professional replace it. I recognize, though, I’m fighting a losing battle here and you’re going to get a laptop no matter what, so I’d say get whatever sounds good to you and chance the consequences

No, you wouldn’t be fighting a losing battle, I am open to suggestions so please feel free to give your advice, although I noticed that when I first made this thread you said the laptops I posted where all fine and they all had 16gb ram, hope you don’t mind me asking but why the change of opinion?

I don’t recall saying that, I would never vouch for a computer with less than 32 GB of RAM  but that’s irrelevant. Here’s what you need in a laptop for Blender: 32 GB of RAM. SSD, minimum 512 GB. Blend files can get pretty big. You’ll realistically want at least 1 TB, if you can find it. 1920x1080 minimum screen resolution (quite common for laptops to skimp
on that). If you’re going AMD CPU- good choice, but Intel would work too- you want a Ryzen 5600 minimum.

Hi for the Lenovo Legion 5 laptop, I came across this video below, from 9:00 minute mark it shows that the RAM can be upgraded, what’s your take on this? I know you have a preference for desktop and I wish I was in a place where I could truly feel at home, that way I would buy a desktop but like I said in my previous post, I am at a particular place where I don’t intend to stay at long term so mobility is kind of a big deal for me. Anyway, does this make the laptop a good choice? would you advise me to buy a laptop with upgradable ram?

A laptop with replaceable RAM is an excellent idea. Without that feature, you throw the whole thing away if a 50 dollar stick of RAM dies
