Can anyone suggest a method of making a persistent emissive effect (eg. Lightsaber trail)

(Eevee ideally, but Cycles too)

I’m looking into a way for bright parts of objects to leave behind a trail when animated. Motion blur does it pretty well, but I don’t want extreme motion blur on the whole scene.

I could composite two passes, one with motion blur and one without, but that would add to my render times significantly.

Any ideas?

Render an emission pass as well as a vector pass then use the Vector Blur node on the Emission pass. So for instance render to Multilayer EXR, bring that into the compositor, this way you have a single file. I did something very similar.
