Can I have old interface and hotkeys in Blender 2.8?

We survived one interface change. It was unpleasant but still it was same old good Blender.
But now I feel like I forced to use 3ds max which I have to pay/subscribe for anyway. And everything I hate so much about 3dmax UI is now in Blender too.
Through years I managed to make 3dmax somehow feels and looks similarly to Blender UI which had been just perfect before that last change.
God sake why?

In Preferences > Keymap you can choose to use the 2.7x keymap.

You are not forced to use 3ds Max.

Or he could even go back to a Blender version before it became “unpleasant” :stuck_out_tongue:

The rest of us can continue to exist in reality where the majority of users are appreciative of the work the developers have done.

Thanks William. It makes it much easier . Although most of my own custom keys I did through years are not working at all or it just can’t read exported hotkey file properly.

And Yeah, Blender 1.8 interface would be nice. It was cool, minimalistic and without all that Autodesk styled crap. Fully customizable. All necessary things right next to your workspace, nothing redundant. Little of that hidden button/checkbox stuff you have to recollect each time in what closed currently panel you found them last time
In fact it was god sent UI. So refereshing after Autodesk space shuttle cockpits

This reminds me… I really hate all the whiz bang buttons and safety features of modern cars. I prefer to push a wobbly button that snaps the radio dial right where I want (or close to it). I miss rolling down the window to adjust my side mirror. And the seatbelt? Don’t get me started… the lap-only version was the best. I really hate updated things and modern features.

Yeah, cars were better when you had to wind them up using a hand crank. Free exercise!

I hate the new ui and the recent new keymaps (andlong time Blender user here), especially the new modal selection stuff. However I still appreciate the work done by the devs. Please do not try to segragate the community that way.

The issue at hand here is that the idea of making Blender industry standard is a flawed one. Integrating some standard means you (most likely) will repeat other people’s mistakes as well, because their behavior is accepted as so called more standard.

My aim was not to segregate anyone. It was a gentle dig at the idea that anyone would prefer going back to a much older UI. That kinda backfired when the OP revealed he did prefer the Blender interface from decades ago.

I prefer 2.7 interface . it’s not perfect. Few things that were cool in original one had never made its way into 2.5 one but mostly it’s very same. It’s functional, its colors are easy for your eyes. It doesn’t annoy you by cool looking but 100% useless bells and whistles. You see just what you supposed to see.

For years Blender was and still is my preferred 3d modeller. It have always been super efficient.
Few years ago it actually had an edge over 3d max in quiet a few areas. Everyone used Blenders code based UV plugins in both Max and Maya for example. Now those days are gone, Autodesk woke up and advanced way ahead.

I am and will always be a lot appreciative to all Blender contributors but just unhappy with the choice they made. And it will be a while till I have a time to learn the new Blender I guess.

Maybe they will do finally the data transfer modifier that actually transfers/project UV from one topology to another. Or maybe texture baker that does AA, or maybe Cycles baker would treat edited vertex normals correctly . So far the only feature I am super excited of is bevel shader baking.

I prefer 2.7 as well, but I guess it’s because I already got used to it. UI changes are always a PITA (with the exception of new users), no matter how good or bad it is.

Well… here is my thoughts… The old Blender versions will be supported forever, just think about what Blender can do already… is it worth switching to 2.8 anytime soon if the stuff that it can do right now and all the versions before has everything to offer which you need at this point?

It’s like with a Nintendo 64 or any other game console, as long as your current hardware and software configuration works, you can just keep it that way. Power connectors and video adapters will always be the same …or at least always have adapters for it. The principe won’t change.

Heck, I have an old computer that only exists because the editing software I use for quick specific edits can only be run on the older hardware. And this Software is from 1998… and still has functions any other editing software has not to offer in this variation…

so what is the point in switching to 3DS max… just use your current Blender build … it will continue to serve the way it always did.

I on the other hand like new UI, but not so much the new features. Can i have new UI with 2.5 functionality?! :grinning:

Oh that’s a good one! We should remove OpenSubdiv and replace it with Blender 2.2 era S-Mesh (for those old-timers who remember)

I personally would like 2.8 If we could get this one fixed. My hate will diminish greatly like snow under sun light :slight_smile:
