I recently added a 2nd monitor and changed my default configuration to use both windows, so I could use the one on my main monitor for only my 3D Viewport and all the data and info is in a 2nd window on the side monitor.
With older files, when I open them, data and info is on the right, where I had it previously, and in the same window as the Viewport.
Is there a way to import the windows/UI settings from my defaults or from a more recent file into these older files - so all the modeling and so on remains, but it now uses the newer settings?
On the Save & Load tab in Preferences, there’s an option called Load UI.
If you disable that, Blender will keep the setup from your default startup file when you open an existing file. With the option enabled, it will use the window setup that was saved with the file.
Thanks! Tried searching, but once I used the words “import” and “settings,” all I got were hits about importing settings from older versions of Blender.
I found it also impacts new files. I had a file using one window up and unchecked the “Load UI” and then created a new file and it stuck with the existing one window config. So this works, and I’m going to leave it checked. When I load older files, I can uncheck it, load, then check it again, so I can deal with it on a file by file basis.
If you have a particular setup that you like, you can save it as your default startup file.
I save an empty file that I can make changes to as I adjust things. Then I also set that as the default file.
You can do that from the menu: File -> Defaults -> Save Startup File.
