Cannot select vertices in edit mode after subdivision modifier?

hi! it seems like the edit mode box is only showing 4 vertices even after i subdivided. im not sure if its because i downloaded a new version of blender, it was working on my old version. but i went back and downloaded ver 3.5 but its still showing like this:

Hi,
with the setup you are showing the subdivision modifier is not applied so you can select just the original cube vertices.
Apply the modifier then you can select all the vertices.

And to answer your other question: you can’t apply modifiers automatically (in vanilla Blender). And it’s better this way, it would be an undesirable behavior because modifiers are often used for non-destructive modeling
