Cant parent mesh to bone without mesh moving

how do i keep a mesh being parented to a bone from moving when i set it? the mesh keeps doing funky things like rotating 90 degrees on the y axis and moving to the origin of the tail of the bone instead of the head or just moving to a completely random point

Parent but choose Keep Offset, not Connected

there is no option for that. i am in the relations tab in object properties, am i not in the right place?

Hello and welcome aboard!

Don’t use the object properties relations tab to parent something. I’ve never really figured out how to make that work correctly, and here’s why…

When I started using blender, that panel didn’t exist. Back then, the workflow was to select the mesh object (in object mode) then shift-select the armature, enter pose mode and select the bone. Then CTRL-P → set parent to bone from the popup menu.

I’m not sure how to work the relations tab and every time I try to use it, I get mixed results. Rather than figure out what my problem is, I just select things and use the hot-key and done.

Hope this helps,
Randy
