Cargo port [Nov 19: First container ship WIP picture]

First off, Love the name. I’ve read the books and seen the movie, hope they make the other books in the series.

On topic:

Very nice technicality with the storage and other equitment. I’m looking forward to the finished product. Are you rendering with AO on or off?

@Streen: I’ve read the books too but I’ve never seen the movie.

On topic:

I use AO for rendering

My progress so far

Some comments on that would be a real help

If you want constructive crits, I would be easier is we had a ref image, it looks good so far and I know you’ll make it as close as you can. Can’t wait to see the full scene though. Are you doing each structure as a seperate file and the going to append your scene file??

Even if there is no ref image it seems reallistic to me (in the way “possible”).
But you will have a lot of work to do on the texturing part.
Anyway, keep going that way.

I don’t have a ref image for the crane. I’ve looked at several pictures and then started. Only for the part with the wheels I used a ref image (http://www.conomos.com/images/Crane%204.jpg)

The objects (crane, container and other stuff) are seperate files and I’m going to append it later to the rest of the scene.

I’m aware of the “texturing problem” THis will be hard. I’ve started with some tests on that but so far there aren’t good results

It looks good so far, though I would like to see come cables or possible simple pully system to connect the arm to the part that extends up.

I finally found some time to continue with this project.

Here’s the latest update:

Great looking crane. I’m a big fan of intermodel equipment. Rails/Ships/Trucks getting together all in one place. It doesn’t get better then that. A beehive of activity 24/7 and the animation and rendering should be marvelous. I’ll be watching this one.

Some small changes and a different perspective:

I’ve started working on the most impportant part of the crane: The crane operator’s cabin and the part to grab the containers (don’t know the name for that  )

Near the bottom of the page there is a description of the parts of a crane

The item you describe is called the spreader.

Great work so far. Me Likey

@Ronson2k3: Thanks. Some usefull words there, especially for someone like me who isn’t a native english speaker

Another Update:

and I’ve done some very basic colour tests. This is what I think the final model will more or less look like:

(rendered without AO)

Wow, those are really good. Mabye you could do a tutorial on how you started

I love it. The detail is tremendous. Are you working from drawings or photos?

First I searched the internet for some good reference images. I found some close-ups of the lower part with the wheels and that’s where I’ve started. In the beginning I worked close on the reference and after I finished the wheel-part I followed more or less my imagination (of course i had some good pictures as an inspiration source).
I don’t know if this is worth a tutorial.

I use photos as an inspiration source. When I come to some details I first do some drawings to get a general idea how it should look like.

I’ve finished the spreader and added some more details and cables.

To do:

  • machine room
  • check the proportions
  • textures

C&C still welcome
