Castle reconstruction

Hi Guys,

Inspired by my recent playthrough of KCD2 I decided to recronstruct a castle ruin in my hometown. Years ago I already made a quick and dirty clay version of it as part of my master thesis. It was never really finished so I decided to finish modelling it and also texture it.

All the architecture was modelled by me in Blender.
I used textures from Polyhaven, Poliigon and Quixel.
The trees are from 3D Shaker and some other plants were included in the Geoscatter Addon.
The sheep are from Sketchfab.
HDRI is from HDRI Haven.

Constructive criticism is always welcome.
I hope you like it.

I love it, the detail makes it extremely believable - great work!

If you find out a way to include a wireframe render or even more angles, I’d be delighted. If it does not work for the main post, maybe as a reply in the comments?

Haha, i also just saw this after managing to turn off kcd2 at 1:30 am  . Now I’m thinking of booting it up again. Warhorse should include this in part 3, awesome job!

And are you following original drawings or documentation or just imagination? Because we wanted to cooperate with archeologists in the past but there was not enough preserved documents for the castle we wanted to visualize.

If I may suggest one thing - print the render out, put it in a cover, and place it there. Even though it’s not 100% accurate, it might cheer up some visitors to see that someone is taking care. You can put there your contact information and beside nice walk in the forest, maybe it can bring you some opportunities  You inspired me a lot with this one  As I mentioned we were also passionate visualizing history (we made VR tour of historical village https://www.zorestudio.com/archeological-museum and helped archeological museum in our village )

If there is anything I can help you with - let me know!

Actually as part of my master thesis in architecture I measured the whole castleground with traditional methods.

No modern equipment only some ropes, a piece of paper and a pencil. Additionally I gathered some info in some libraries and there I also found some old hand drawings. It is very interesting because the castle still belongs to the same family that built it in 1236.

I will shoot you a DM with the thesis in PDF format. It is in german but you can at least look at the images
I also did a quick 3D model back then but it is very basic. You can see it at the end of the pdf document. I think it was the first thing I made in blender.

Thank you for all your suggestions, I will see what can be done.

Send it to family too, they will maybe revisit and try to do something with it  - is it accesible for visitors or is it closed? I love when 3D meets real life situations I will take a look at thesis thank you very much!

It is ever more great that you updated the 3D file now it looks like real life photo (I do appreciate all the little details like the dust from chimneys, dirt etc)

The owner already knows about everything and I also showed him the result of the thesis. I needed his permission to do the measuring and everything.

In theory you should not acces the castle ground because it is dangerous, but nothing restricts the access so everyone can go and visit it (There is only a warning sign at the entrance)

Also thanks for your compliment, I invested a lot of time in texture painting

Very nice. Keep in mind, that the reality was a bit different. Meaning, everything was new, fresh quality wood, fresh clean walls, often painted white (because they liked it) even with paintings and no trees around the castle. But the old castle look is way cooler.
I especially like how you did the roofs, looks very correct.
