Chameleon and Fly Short (Critics needed!)

Yeah the eyes are not big enough yet anyway here is a slight update. Legs are still missing and I plan on adding the hairs.

I didn’t really wanted to show the storyboard yet but here it is. Not sure if you can actually see anything as I had to compress it in order to attach.

continued in the next post as this forum only allows a max of six posts…

…storyboard continued

and that’s that.

As always C&C welcome

Bummer not comments yet… is it really that bad? Anyway I’ll be out of town the next week and I’m not sure I’ll have access to the internet so updates will be postponed til then. Please leave a comment or two as this is probably the first ambitiouse project I’m actually able to complete…

Fly looks great. Best model of all. Nice proportions f the base model. Good luck with your progress.

Well, I had a much longer post in the works, but I had to leave the computer and someone else in the family accidentally crashed Firefox. (I know better to leave it without backup, but I didn’t this time) But before I go and retype it all (it was pretty long) I want to ask you something. How set are about following the storyboard that you’ve posted? Because, while I like it, I think it could be improved to be even better.

Well hay, I’m still waiting for the shower to open up, so I’ll say one thing I had in the lost post.
When the chameleon’s tung gets stuck on the mouse, I think that would be a great opportunity for a little more physical comedy. instead of the mouse just flying back up at him, have it stay put with him trying to pull back his tunge a few times, then it finally gives way and comes shooting at him.

oh, and I know what you mean about the lack of posts on peoples projects. I’ve completely lost motivation (and got lost on how to do something…) after no one posted on my first/only more ambitious project.

Atemporalskill the storyboard is open to discussion as is everything else. I already have some changes in mind which I haven’t incorporated yet.
At the moment I do not plan to change it too much since I feel that I’m capable of actually accomplishing it and that is the primary and foremost goal. This of course doesn’t mean that I’m not open to suggestions. I actually had something like you suggested in mind and I’ll see if I can encorporate it when I’m at the corresponding shot.

Anyway here are some updates:

Added the legs and tweaked everything a little bit. Still missing are the hairs.

Twirled the tail as I’m probably not going to animated it a whole lot and tweaked back flap. Added the inside of the mouth with the tounge.
Still missing the claws.

and some turntables of some of the models:

Yeah it’s a bummer there are just so many posts that the projects just drop so fast in the list. But I figure if I keep posting someone will reply eventually.

The feet look a tad long on the fly.

Don’t know if this is helpful but I found it with a quick search, scroll down a little bit and there are a few skeleton pictures of chameleons. The head might improve with a little retouching to show the the form of the skull a little bit more, that should help the odd massless feeling I get looking at the model right now. and maybe increase the size of this eyes a little, but I could be wrong on that.

keep up the great work!

I really like what I see. The work you’ve done for this is very thorough - props, storyboards, characters… I like it when thorough projects like that get posted.

My only advice is that the personality of the chameleon is what’s going to really make or break the animation. The audience is going to see him very briefly, so do the best you can to make him personable and alive in that brief time.

Otherwise, I look forward to seeing how this comes along. Keep at it!

Thanks for the images. I have several ref images but this is really going to become handy especially on the backfoot toes. The massless feel might also come from the fact that I have no shadows active in the shown render.
From the images you posted I think I need to increase the size of the chameleons head. About the legs of the fly… I’m not to sure but I’ll try a shorter version to see how it looks.

Thanks Anayo I’ll try to give it personality.

Hello hopefully somebody will read this with all the excellent blending life threads popping up recently.

Well here is a small update: I resized the head, enlarged the head flap a bit and added the claws as well as the third toe on the back legs.

here are the wire shots (mirror modifier is not applied yet)

Keep in mind that I want to animate the chameleon.

Please give some C&C

hmm, I still get this thought that something just doesn’t feel quite right, maybe textures will fix it, I don’t know. Sorry I’m not very helpful, but I can’t seam to put my finger on what exactly it is that’s slightly off.
Am I alone with this feeling anyone?

Thanks for the comment! Hopefully somebody else can put a finger on it. Anyway if I do not hear from anyone I’ll try to texture and rig the critter.

But before that I have to do some additions to the fly anyway.

Thanks again and please keep the critics and comments coming

Hey,
Very nice so far. Love the idea for the animation, should be pretty funny!

Long time no update so here is a small one:
basic shaders and a view of the inside of the mouth.

If no one can suggest any improvements or changes I will apply the mirror modifier and start texturing as well as creating a armature for this beast.

C&C welcome

the arms seem strange to me, like they should be tapered to the wrists? and maybe some knuckles on the hands, and longer fingers? I don’t know lizard anatomy too well tho. And are the thumbs on the left side on the wrong side?

Thanks for the critic but this isn’t directly a lizard. And here is a one of the refs I used:

The feet look right to me. About the tapering I’m not sure I can’t really see that in any of the refs but maybe I’m just blind cause I’ve been looking too much at the critter.

Any more critics?

This is looking very good, I really like the character modelling and the set…

Also think that you have a really nice idea going(judging from the storyboard), I do agree with Atemporalskill, there are maybe a few minor things that could be added in to enhance it(but i wouldnt worry too much about them in the initial phases) the best thing is probably just to do it exactly like you have storyboarded it because then once you have finished the initial version you will be able to judge for yourself what parts need a bit of work…

Just pay quite a bit of attention to camera angles and lighting, it may not seem too like the most important to you right now, but it will pay off if you have it carefully though out…

hay, I did a little search and here is what I found for the legs.
for the front; the fore arm seems to be a little larger then the upper arm, yours looks like it is the other way around right now. Here is an example:
http://curiousanimals.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/cool-green-chameleon3.jpg

and for the back legs, looks like the narrowest part is the knee, but from this angle I can’t see what it is like on your model. another example image:
http://www.the-lizard-lounge.com/content/gallery/lizard-pictures/veiled-chameleon/veiled-chameleon-01-female.jpg

Also from these two pictures it looks like the body could be a little longer. Hope that’s helpful, not seeing this for a little helped me look at it with fresh eyes.

Thank you Atemporal: Yeah the front legs looks off because I actually modelled a shoulder part and in my refs and the once you posted it just looks as if the legs start directly at the body. I’m going to try to remodel that part. I will try to remodel the back legs as well since your second ref images shows a nice view of the back leg.
About the lenght of the body… I’m modelling a chameleon that has a flap on the back. The pics you posted don’t show nay of them having such a flap and I think the back flap makes the body look shorter. I’ll try to lessen it and see where that leads.
Thank you so much for the critics and keep em coming…

Ok here is a revised version. I made the shoulder smaller and tried to make a taper towards the feet. It is not quite as much as in the last ref of Atemporalskill but I kind of like it.

So tell me what you think!
