Change obj to .blend

I like to make GFX for a game I play, but recently when I tried to open the file with blender, it said that the file type (obj) wasn’t supported. I looked it up and apparently I need a .blend file, is there any way to do this or get around my problem? Thanks.

Open and Save commands are for .blend files only. Any other formats, including .obj, need to be imported and can also be exported.

Since you want to convert from .obj to .blend, you need to import the .obj, and then save out the .blend file.

Edit: Welcome to the forum! You’ll note from the following comments - and edits - that we’re very serious about helping each other out. Hope it was helpful.

Obj is an import format originally from wavefront, what you need to do is to import the obj. and then you can save it as .blend.

I suggest you google a bit since you obviously need to get the basic first.

It’s originally from Wavefront, not Maya.

Thank Bart my mistake i just update my reply to reflect this.

OT:
Yeah, but now Bart’s makes no sense. It’s problematic to change facts in posts after someone replied to them. It messes up the conversation. At least you mentioned it afterwards.

Bart didn’t add any confusion he just correct me about the origin of the obj. format, it was my mistake.

As a long term Max user i always had in my mind that the format origin was from Maya since i am no 3d format history Geek!

@PastCycle If the file is in obj format then you can select File>Import>Obj and you should then be able to see the file in blender without having to do any conversions of the file type.

If that option is not listed you may need to enable it in preferences through the addons. Just type obj into the search and it should come up and checkmark the box. Afterwards you will now have the option listed and shown above.

I know that. YOU were the one to introduce confusion by changing a post that has a reply. It changes the context and turns Bart’s into non-sense. Hadn’t you mentioned that you changed your post, it had lost it’s meaning completely. Is it more clear now?

Edit: Non-sense is a too strong word. Let’s say redundant.
