Hey I am getting all my portfolio pieces ready for a character. I was wondering what the clay render for character is. Is it the high poly being rendered or is it the low poly with the normal map with a plain base color. I have an example here. I’m wondering because my high poly from Zbrush is not posed, like there’s is here so that wouldn’t work to perfectly pose it the same as my finished model. When I do the low poly though, I have normal and displacement, but the displacement is overbearing the normal with a plain texture. So maybe I just do regular color and just the normal map, I don’t know what it’s even supposed to be so I’m just rambling at this point. Thanks in advance!
I think people have different methods for clay render, a lot of the time they just use material override, make a clay type material ( plain colour with roughness apx .5 or more) and use a material override so all of the object/s use that material. Material override is in the view layer properties tab.
As you use displacement and normals you should probably include those maps in the clay material to keep the details.
In the example you posted it looks like they have also used Ambient Occlusion, most people do not do this.
The idea of a clay render is to show off the form of your character without the distraction of the textures, so it is really up to you.
I would include normals/displacement but not AO but it is a personal decision.
Okay, awesome thank you!
