sooo. am trying to rig an armature. Have had to restart over a few times already, I don’t understand why. Even when I very carefully select the proper component & bone I wind up with unwanted links?
& have already tried alt + p on everything, but it seems like linking still remains.
Can i please get some advice?
How do i get rid of all the links, start over without deleting the armature again?
the best way to know if something has a parent is to select that object or bone > goto the Properties Panel > Object (the box Icon) > Relations > and look under Parent: if any thing is listed… hit the ‘X’ and it will clear out any Parent on that object or bone…
Actually if it’s a bone…
select the Armature > tab into edit mode > Properties Panel > Bone (bone Icon) > Relations > Parent: hit the ‘X’ to clear any parent…
Be sure that you are parenting bones to bones in ‘Edit’ mode and not in “object” mode…
it is possible to have a bone a parented to an object in ‘object mode’ and to a bone in ‘edit’ mode…
this will cause all kinds of problems…
Yes thank you, i definitly think i have done that. but also when i go to the " Properties Panel > Bone (bone Icon) > Relations > " tried both edit & pose & object there is nothing to remove.
think am going to have to scrap it again & start over

One piece of advise… that may help… that’s not too obvious…
is when ever you have to unlink an Armature from a Mesh… you must do two things…
#1… delete the Modifier …
Select the Mesh > Properties Panel > Modifiers (the wrench icon) > hit the ‘X’ next to the modifier you wish to delete…
#2 you also need to you check your vertex groups…
Select the Mesh > Properties Panel > Object Data (the triangle icon) > Vertex Groups > click on the black down arrow > select Delete all vertex groups
Then you know you are clear to re-parent your Armature to your mesh without it having any unwanted vertex groups that may be effecting your mesh…
however… if you have only been using Ctrl+P > object and not been generating any vertex groups in the parenting process this still may not be the cause of the problem…
and…
you may have created some vertex groups that don’t have anything to do with your parenting of the Armature to the Mesh that you con’t want deleted…
