Cloth pin group to armature

Hello,

I swear I have done this before, but for the life of me I can’t figure out how to have a pin group (cloth sim) move with an armature?

I am posing some clothes and want the boot rims to stay in a certain location on the base. So I set up pin groups around the rim of the boots - however, these pin groups do not move with the mesh/armature? I’ve tried parenting to both the armature and the base mesh (human).

I just want the boots not to fall down.

I’ve tried all sorts of tension/compression setting but I’d rather have a way to pin the rim where I want it.

Select your boots, shift+select armature → ctrl+p → automatic weights. Move armature modifier in the stack above cloth modifier. Make sure pin group is selected in the shape section of your cloth modifier. Done.

Dang, I really thought that would work. But thanks for the suggestion!

It actually produces the same result if you turn off pin group, compared to just cloth sim parented to the base mesh.

I’ve been faffing around with hook modifiers for the last while to no avail either. Parenting hooks to bones doesn’t seem to do anything, I also tried hooking to empties that were parented to the armature, etc.

It’s really bugging me that I can’t remember how I did this before.

Thats weird. I am using pinned groups everytime and it always work with armature deformations. Maybe your file is somehow corrupted? Try append your objects to another blend.

Make sure that Dynamic Mesh is checked under Shape in the Cloth settings?

Other then that, I wouldn’t Cloth Sim the boots anyway, unless there’s a very good/specific reason to do so. Way easier to just hard model them and let the armature do all the movement.

Yeah - I do wonder if there is an issue here, as I am sure I have done similar deformations and it worked.

I’ll try checking the dynamic mesh setting next time - although I did end up doing as you mentioned, just deleting the problematic area and remaking once the simulation was saved. I really miss Marvelous designer, the ability to just mouse click and drag (and then pin) is so handy.
