Can anyone tell me if there is a problem with cloth and soft bodies working together? For my current project i rigged a female character with a soft body simulation on her chest. After i modelled the cloth for her torso i tried a cloth simulation but as soon as i start the simulation, the cloth seems to explode immediately after one frame. I thought maybe there is something wrong with the shirt mesh so i remodeled it but the result is the same. I’m stuck on this one, is there some kind of setting in the cloth or soft body menu that i need to check for it to work?
edit: I should mention that another mesh with softbody sim is driving bones so the character mesh itself does not have softbody simulation on it. So i’m not even sure that the soft body sim causes this problem but i did similar characters to this one and the only thing that differs from them is the soft body sim.
Of course. After i tried to reduce the scene as much as possible leaving only the simplified character mesh and the cloth. The problem still exists, so either it has to be something wrong with the meshes or the units. The units are set to metric and i noticed that when i measure the distance between cloth and collsion object is about 2.5 cm, even tho the distance in the collision menu is set to 1 mm. The sim tries to push the shirt outwards till it start to explode and lose the collision and ends up somewhere around the waiste. Have a look
it’s almost always comes down to collision settings if something explodes and expands.
Luckily, in your case you have to change one thing - “Thickness Outer” value in “Collision” modifier of the torso. Change 0.02 (meters) to the lowest 0.001. In other words, the gap between torso and cloth is going to be just 1 mm.
Scaling everything would result in similar outcome, but then you are dealing with totally different cloth simulation with gigantic cloth pieces.
Also, you can raise “Quality Steps” a little in the “Cloth” modifier, so the cloth doesn’t glitch through the body.
Thanks that worked. I thought of that yesterday but must have overlooked the Thickness outer settings. Scaling would’ve worked too but i rather stick to real world measures. I find it quite confusing, that the ‘Thickness outer’ settings doesn’t adjust to the unit setup (like the collision settings in the cloth modifier does).
I accidently posted in the off-topic chat and asked an admin to move it. Never expected to get help here, hehe. Well nevermind admin.
