Cloth Simulation Activation

Is there a way of activating a cloth simulation only when an object interacts with the simulated plane?
A bit like rigid body deactivation?

You can keyframe the simulation so that the cloth starts out like a ridge body, then just before or just a frame or 2 , the object collides with it, keyframe it back to the original cloth parameters…that will make it look like a solid and then turning into cloth on impact…here is a vid, at 3:35 in
