I tried to create something like this coffee machine, you can see the result so far below.
I am pretty much a beginner and this is the first personal project I have worked on without following tutorials. Based on this work, I would love to have the feedback of this community to know what are the ‘big rocks’ that I should focus on to keep improving my 3d skills.
One thing I already have identified is that I know nothing about topology and subd modelling: for this reason, I am already following tutorials on those topics.
I am open to any type of feedback, but as a beginner, especially interested in those big, evident things that I am definitely missing in my approach. A bit of a pareto approach, let’s say.
Very nice… ( also because you added the scene file )…
i would say you used the first 20% to accomplish 80% of the look and now you have to spent 80% to get the last 20% to be “very good”…
if this is a :
– “product beauty shot” then why put it into a shadowing corner
– a “realistic” scene then there are missing “everthing else” ( i know it’s WIP… )
the upper chrome part is also very “unvisible” because of the reflections (mine is just other lighting)
the lower chrome is a bit too “shiny” i think; because it’s reflection too much (did multiply the roughness by 5 for this…)
the lines for 4. are actually wrong i meant "some more greebles at the top… also:
and
possible locations for some more details (on-off and option switch… display… etc.)
the last three points may vary on the idea to build this “exact” machine or “something similar”…
Do not take this too seriously… because it’s all up to you what you want to archieve…
The main issue I guess it’s still present is #4, but… I have just tried, and I still don’t know how to make it happen! I think I will pause the project for some time and come back to it once I have acquired better modelling skills.
Also all the advice about imperfections, materials and lights is great: I have on my future to do list a course specialised in product renders which covers those topics specifically.
I meant taking a break! Apologies, not my first language
I have tried again to recreate that top part with subd and proper topology, but I couldn’t get it to work, so I have found a few tutorials that I am planning to do on that.
I have also found a Udemy course for product renders that I am planning to follow.
I have an update (a big one for me): I have managed to model the nozzle using subd! It took me like 10 tries, but I eventually did it! (below images and blend file)
I wouldn’t say the topology is perfect, but it feels reasonably good, and also with a matcap the issues I see seem quite minor. I am really happy as my inability to model subd shapes was the #1 issue I had identified with this first personal project and I would say I have learned quite a few things with my courses
I will very slowly continue with this scene: the final plan is a breakfast scene and the coffee machine is just one element, but it will take me ages as I’m also doing a number of courses and projects in parallel
