Collada import failed: What's wrong with this .dae file?

So a couple months ago I ripped a model from a video game and using Blender 2.79 (which I’m the most comfortable with), I exported it as a collada file and submitted it to a database of video game assets, with very high quality control, where it was eventually accepted. However, today I noticed a comment saying it doesn’t open in Blender 3.0, and sure enough when I try to import it, it gives me an error message I have no idea how to even begin understanding.

This seems to only be an issue in 3.0 and later. I’m afraid my submission on that site will be taken down if I don’t fix it, but the console message is just a bunch of fancy tech language to me, I don’t understand it :frowning:

Looks like the importer can’t find the uv’s (texture co ords) so it cant map the textures…

Id say post the file but, you ‘ripped’ (stole) it?

I figured out the issue. For some reason exporting in Blender 2.79 doesn’t include that data by default (even though clearly the file can be opened in earlier versions of Blender with the textures mapped properly, so i don’t see why the newer versions can’t).

No, I didn’t ‘steal’ it. Ripping is a term that here means extracted from a video game. There’s a whole database of models from video games that I contribute to. It has a customs section too, but mainly it’s a resource of official assets. https://www.models-resource.com/

It’s not an illegal piracy site. They blacklist content from games whose devs have explicitly asked them not to host the assets from.

The sub culture of ripping 3D assets from games is a minefield. Not only that you could newer be sure about any copyright problems even if you just do fanmade because there is abig legal difference between complete done yourself or just used from the copyright owner ! And on the other hand some of this users are vert angry if someone uses “their” models in a own image or redistribute them (which is nothing else what theyself do).
Anyway for game asset research those are great but don’t try to learn anatomy by this

So maybe this is why nobody wants to have those content or a disscussion about this here on BA.

So please don’t make anybody sue BA while posting hints to copyrighted material.

( even a rule om dev.blender… etc … i believe…)

You may even ask a mod to delete your image and try to edit/delete the link you have given by youself? The staff from this site all have pseudonyms and there isn’t any adress so nobody knows for sure. And publishing without permission is not legal by default just by stating there is a blacklist. Just a written permission can prove the positive answer from any copyright owner. And proving it by yourself is nearly impossible if those assets aren’t bought by you so you may have a legal business partner who does warant you the legal use of the assets.

Of course we can discuss possible problems with an older dae export from blender not correctly importing into a newer version.
