Just curious but is this possible?
If you mean a mirror modifier you can just press the Apply Button in the ([F9]) Modifier list. If you mean something different could you please describe the problem more detailed?

what i meant was, could I after I get the shape i want, then somehow convert the mirrored part of the object seperately editable?
I think you might want to manually mirror the faces you want then separate them by pressing “p”
When you’ve done modeling, to remove the mirror modifier without applying it, click the X button on the mirror modifer.
While in object mode , select the mesh object and press SHIFT-D.
Make sure the pivot point is set to objects centre then press CTRL-M and choose the appropriate axis to mirror on.
