Have you tried changing the stroke placement to “surface” in the tool panel at the top? Also you can increase the radius size of your stroke (texture)

Im not able to find the stroke placement. Probably becaause this option has been removed or changed in the latest version of blender 2.8 that I’m using. I’ve found where it should be,in this post :
