Creating your own textures

Hello their sorry to bother you i was just wondering how do you create your own textures for blender?
And also what type of equipment will i need and what kind of software. Because i wanted to do a little test so i took a picture with my iphone of a tree with some moss on it and i tried to create the tree stump in blender. So i came to put the texture on and it did not look so good. Thanks for any help.

a good texture is usually more complex than just an image file. there are texture channels which you can stack and use for specularity, bump, reflectivity and all kinds of stuff. each channel will have it’s own particular grayscale map which is usually a variation of the original image texture to control these aspects. also to really use image textures effectively you have to learn UV mapping.

simple tip - get real world references and rebuild them in Cycles with the modules.

Thank you all for the information, i have created bump maps and all, but when i go to texture my object/mesh on some parts it’s blurry and it’s all mixed up and you can see the seams. Will this be because on the uv uwrap because i tried all of them uv unwrap , smart uv unwrap and cube projection and i tried to mark seams their is no difference. So do i need a better camera or is it the way i am unwrapping the mesh. Thanks
