Creeper

Found this interesting concept image online by Jonathan W(I believe). Using it to practise box modeling/topology aswell as capturing a 2D concept in 3D. Deleted the nose and mouth I had due to crappy topo. Was giving me a headache to tweak so I’m going to try to extrude those 2 parts. Ears on the way I hope.

Latest Update:

the topology is looking nice so far. keep it up. are you going to do the ears as well?

Unfinished ear, nose and lips. Definitely making note to put more effort into these 3 much earlier on in the model. Their a pain in the *** to do at this point.

I still feel like it needs alot of tweaking to really capture the 2D image.

yes needs some tweaks as you say but its also looking pretty good.

Those cheekbones are really a stand out on the sketch…so when details like that go in I think you’ll be in good shape.

nice work.

I also liked him without the mouth and nose…really creepy…might make a good design to do someday.

keep going.

I think you’re doing a pretty good job modelling a difficult subject. there’s always the option to go to sculpting when the base is done. to get in the little details.

Thanks J, LOL you’re right about the one with the missing mouth and nose. Ahahahaah I didn’t even think of that at the time.

Thanks Gus, it has been quite a challenge to capture this guy. Yea, I did consider the sculpting approach for detail at one point but decided to just do it the old fashion way lol.

Here’s an update. Please excuse some of the incorrect topo in the nose/mouth area. I’ve learned my lesson but I’m saving it for the next project. I’m going to finish the ears, push and pull a bit and call the modeling done on this one. I know, easier said than done haha.

You can blow by the ears and leave those for last…

I want to see those heavy line in the face…those creep me out.

So I believe I’m calling the modeling portion complete! x) Otherwise I’ll tweak till New Years. Going to leave those ears in their current crappy state and do them properly on the next project. I want to move on to the eyes and maybe a basic skin shader now for a final render before I lose motivation to finish haha.

Edit:
James: Yea I didn’t define mine as much as the 2D image. I was getting some bad results. Probably because of some of the lazy topology around the nose/mouth.

Testing out some eye modeling. Anyone think the bevel on eye is too strong?

nope, I’d say its good. especially if you want to include some emotion in the face, I think the eye bevel could be instrumental in conveying a more “life” into the character. and since this is a caricature, you’re free to exaggerate.
keep going

dude, he came out nice and creepy. Good project.

Thanks for the feedback you guys. Been a big help. I guess I can’t stop now ahaha…Here’s an eyeball test. I’m not liking that the spec is just the reflection of my image plans x/. Trying to work on that and improving the white area a bit. Any critics or suggestions are more than welcome.

Playiing with some lighting. O_O

Looks like fresnel shader “softened” the spec spot in eyes a bit:

Man, that’s so gloomy! I like the simple style you modeled this with! Because the face still has all the features that it needs to show his character/mood.
In the last two renders, the eye’s have really improved the whole expression of the character! He now looks so depressed, like what he had seen and done in his life would have killed something inside him! Like some veterans have the 1000 yard stare, you know…
I also like the main light coming from worm’s eye view, it makes him look a bit threatening! You might want to try emphasizing that effect by playing around with the camera angle a little bit.

Thanks Iron x) the fact that you were able to read into the character so well gives me confidence that I was able to capture him pretty well. I will continue to play with camera and lighting
