CTRL-T posemode basics

Okay - so I make a character mesh and rig it with an armature. I then go to weight paint vertex areas to different bones. Normally the steps are to go into pose mode on the armature, select a bone, then go into object mode and select the mesh, then go into weight paint mode and expect to see the chosen bone still highlighed (and pose-able) using G and R keys, while the main mesh can be painted from blue to red…

…but sometimes (like now) I seem to get is so that when I go into weight paint mode, the area of the bone shows up as red (previous coloured - I’m touching it up) but the bone itself is not selected / pose-able. Right clicking on the bones does not select them when it should.

Don’t quite know what causes this… it may be that I’ve pushed CTRL-TAB one too many times in the wrong mode or something, but then I can spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to get out of it so I can carry on weight painting my character.

Make sense? It’s really annoying and I’d appreciate it if someone would explain to me whats’ going wrong so I can bypass the frustration in future.

Thanks in advance - Lancer.

Aha - I think I know. I was selecting stuff wrong… I should have been in pose mode (perhaps selecting a bone) and then right click on the main mesh away from bones so that the mesh gets selected, and then push CTRL-TAB to get to where I wanted. Pose-able weight paint mode.
