While some of us are stumbling around working out the modifier stacks, found a nifty way to automatically add sub-surf. Works in Object or Edit mode. CTRL 1, 2, 3, or 4 - numbers above keyboard, increase the levels of sub-surf. Anything above that just switches back to layer keys, mostly hiding your work. ~key reveals all
