Haven’t posted any 3D work in a while, so here goes:
Cyberpunk 2049–named for the fusion of styles between Cyberpunk 2077 and Blade Runner 2049. Even though they share the same DNA, each are quite different. What started as a Cyberpunk 2077-inspired render quickly found its way towards the look and feel of BR 2049. Threw in some good CP 2077 easter eggs.
This render has been in the works off-and-on for about a year. What started as a simple modeling exercise turned into the most complicated and demanding render I’ve ever put together. It required all of the knowledge and skills I have developed over the last few years of 3D hobbyist work to finally get this one to the finish line (and it is still evolving.)
I thought it might be fun to walk everyone through a selection of images that demonstrate the evolution of the compositions and all of the elements within the frame. Sometimes I forget just how difficult each render is in the beginning–the anxiety of the proverbial blank canvas–but as soon as the image starts to take shape, the ideas just keep coming.
I can’t wait to show you all the new ones I’m developing! Getting into 3D as a hobby has been enormously gratifying and so much fun to learn, and it allows me to exercise cinematographic parts of my brain in ways I normally can’t on set. I want to push even further, even harder, and expand into different art styles, all through my own strange movie lens. Got a few things to fix/adjust still (add some break-up to the volume), but I’m calling this done (for now).
I’ve included some development shots from the process so you can see how far it came. For the tools, I tried to do as much with the main assets as I could in vanilla Blender, but eventually I realized I was going to need to utilize add-ons like Memsaver, Traffiq, Procedural Alleys/Signs, and a few other notable ones. For the look, I ran it through one of my Dye Sim processes in Resolve with a few other custom DCTLs and Jed Smith’s OpenDRT for my transform out. Linear EXRs were made in Blender and transformed in Resolve for the grade.
Final:
