Cycles Island revisited vol.2

Hi guys,

I wanted to make a waterfall in Blender, and I needed a scene therefore. So I took the original Island from Agus3D, and basically made everything new, apart from the trees.

One frame to render took 1 hour. I’ve used 450 000 Instances of the trees + bushes and rocks. So all in all that are at least a trillion polys  Blender tells me, he uses 1877mb memory, Windows says that its 12gb. The final film was rended with 500 samples in 2.5k.

Music is by Jan Morgenstern! Hope you’ll like it!

very impressive!
very nice camera movement, nice nice

That sounds realistic, jep!

Wow that’s great!

beautiful landscape looks realistic.

Exclente work, congratulations!

Wow, this is fantastic! Great work. Could you explain a little more how you made this? Really love it.

Impressive work! Turned out fantastic

Five stars from me. Excellent!

Very Cool.

Really impressive, but you could use a few more tree models to make it less repetitive

BTW How did you managed to render it in the SuperMUC?

very impressive work!

there are some minor tweaks i would suggest:

  • as mentioned before, the trees would need some more variation (model and color)
  • also the trees could be placed a little bit more random, they are to regular everywhere. you would need some places where are less tress
  • the water shader needs a little tweaking, its reflection is brighter then the source (sun and the one cube) this isnt possible in real life. the reflection should be darker then the source

Thanks for the positive feedback! Glad you’ve liked it!

Thanzex Really impressive, but you could use a few more tree models to make it less repetitive

I work for them for marketing purposes. This video is also going to be used by them for advertising purposes!

• You’re right with the trees, some variation would have been cool, but I was really afraid of memory usage, so I stayed with 2 different models. But variation in colour is I think overrated. We’ve discussed this on the german forum, and Zuggamasta showed this pic: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Aerial_photography_of_forest_habitat.jpg
• Trees are placed random. E.g. look at the side of the mountain on the right, they are quite loosely placed there. But if you do that everywhere, it looks stupid imho.
• The point with the relfection is, that the angle of the cube is exactly in a way, that all the light comes to the sea, and from there to the camera. So a better solution would be to rotate the cube, but it didnt bother me.

Excellent!, nice shots, the music is pretty complementary !

wait wait… really cool, those shots are pretty clean for 500 samples. Did you render this thing on that super computer? ow come 1 frame takes 1 hour than

Yes it was rendered on the supercomputer! But it took 24 hours, since I was only allowed to render on 100 instances.

Amazing! You’ve made a great video. I like the music.

Good! very good

Very nice, though I completely missed the waterfall the first time I watched it because it was more in the distance than I was expecting, given your first sentence.

Holy shit on a single machine this would take you about 3 months than??? damn!
