Cycles Normal Map Support?

Does anyone know if someone is working on normal map support in Cycles and/or when we’ll see it implemented?

I’m planning to start a pretty big project and rendering it in high res is out of the question.

P.S. If not, what are the alternatives to Cycles?

Normal Maps >>> No (unless it happened when I wasn’t looking)
Bump Maps >>> Yes
Displacement Maps >>> Yes

If you can make it work with bumps and displacement,
then you are in luck.

Only Brecht knows when Normal maps will be implemented.

Good Luck on your endeavors.

I don’t have a lot of experience with displacement maps but as far as I know you still need a very high res mesh for the map to work, right? While this is an alternative, it’s not the right one.

P.S. Yeah, I know this question has been asked a lot but if anyone has heard any rumors, it would still be something.

There is a way to subdivide the mesh in the renderer instead of using a modifier. And bumpmaps do not need subdivision. Before giving it up you may want to try and experiment.

Sorry, I can’t seem to find that setting. Is it in the “Render” tab?

Yeah it was in Datablocks > Meshes > “object” > Cycles Settings.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll play with it and see how it goes.
