Cycles Volumetric Rendering

Hey. Here’s my result from tutorial. Rendered about 6 hours. Noise was strangled in photoshop a bit.

couple tests I’ve run:

Very nice! techniques? settings? rendertimes?

all here https://kilbeeu.wordpress.com/2014/05/29/yay-volumetrics-in-cycles/

Thanks! very interesting…

Here are my tests / demos I did a while ago. Notice the render times getting really high when some evil bug was introduced:

this is looking really really good Gottfried!

The bug I had with the sun light was fixed, but maybe you found something new… If you know how the bugs come out you should report it.

Are you going to release some tut btw? Can you give us some more info on these renders? they are quite noise free… rendertimes?

The last one rendered really slowly on the farm, due to me installing a new build. The bug is fixed since a week or so…

There will be some tuts for sure, and regarding the rendertime - check the stamp in the top right

sorry I guess I had the youtube upper bar lowered and I didn’t noticed! well… 15 min are not bad at all… what cpu did you use?

A personal farm or something accessible for anyone?

It’s a personal farm, the CPUs are Quad-Cores from the intel series before i7 so modern 4th generation i7 quad-cores should render it at least twice as fast.

OMG so awesome…
is there any chance you can render this in stereoscopic 3D  !!???
if not the whole animation maybe some still would do
such awesome render again!!

holy crap i try not to go over 30 seconds per frame haha

btw, is anyone having that flickering bug with smoke adaptive domain? workarounds?

just beautiful!

i so need to learn how to do this!

speechless. Unfortunally current consumer CPU computational power seems stick at “core i7” level many years, and next 15 core CPU will hit $4k, you need realy expensive farm to play with such effects.

Looks like finally next gen intel cpus are gonna have more than 4 cores (6 for standard i7 and 8 for pro version, no xeon). However even 1 hr for such a render is not that bad, considering the cpu used is not the most modern and that a lot of optimization is still missing in cycles.

Hey guys I’m struggling with volumetrics right now and I was curious - is there any way to save only volume pass? I need separate layer with volumetrics only.

For that sort of thing you should set up a renderlayer for just the volume stuff… maybe use a holdout shader for everything else in that layer

Thanks! Holdout was the solution  Sample:
