Dandan Concept Art from Arabian Nights

Concept piece depicting a mythical creature called Dandan. It was fleetingly mentioned in Arabian Nights in the tale of the Fisherman and the Merman as ancient monstrous fish which could swallow ships whole.

Software used for everything: The mighty Blender
Compositing was done in Photoshop

Creature Sculpt and texturing were done in Blender with a mix of procedural texturing and texture painting.

The main rock is simple box modelling and sculpting. The creature was rigged and posed.

Adding details and schools of fish with geometry nodes

This is super cool! I love how much detail you put into your monster, even though you can’t see most of it in the final render. Your passion for this piece really shows, it’s awesome  Incredible work, I look forward to seeing more from you!

Glad to hear that  thanks and have fun!

This looks nice!
One thing I am a bit unsure about is the fact that you are using “glossiness” … underwater, that wouldn’t fly. Correct me if I am wrong

You are absolutely right. When i rendered without glossiness, the creature in that particular composition looked too flat for my liking. So I decided to give it a bit of stylisation to show skin detail. I admit it physically looks wrong but visually it created a stronger focal point out of the creature. So I just went with it

This is a nice work !!!

Happy blending !

GupyRaptor, I like it

Thank you so much

I agree. Wonderful.

But I guess I still don’t “get” compositing.

My question would be “Before or after ‘Adding Volumetrics and final lighting’ ?”

Thanks!

Hi. Thanks for your kind comment. I’m glad you liked it.

Compositing was done after volumetrics and final lighting.

In Blender, I rendered a full image along with a mist pass. I used the mist pass in photoshop to drive most of the color grading. It was also used to add depth of field. I added a few touch-ups here and there and called it a day.

I am writing a behind the scenes article for blendernation.com where I will go in some depth about the process.

Happy blending :v:

Thanks

Hi everyone,

Here is the “Behind the Scenes” article of this mystical piece of art!
