Desecration

For this project, I explored texturing techniques on a downloaded concrete sculpt, with a major focus on achieving a realistic depiction of blood flow across the surface . The goal was to simulate how blood would interact with the rough, porous texture of concrete — seeping into cracks, pooling in depressions, and streaking naturally.

I used Substance Painter to create the texture maps, paying particular attention to roughness, height, and color variation. The blood needed to feel physically integrated with the concrete, not simply painted on top. I used layered masks to control opacity and flow patterns, simulating how gravity and surface irregularities would affect the way blood spreads and dries.

After completing the texturing phase, I rendered the model in Blender to study how the blood reacted under various lighting conditions. Specular highlights and subtle color shifts were key in selling the realism — some areas needed to appear wet and reflective, while others conveyed an older, dried stain. The concrete’s natural roughness added complexity, causing the blood to break up and collect in unpredictable ways.

This exploration highlighted the importance of understanding material interaction — in this case, how a fluid like blood behaves on an absorbent, uneven surface like concrete. The combination of detailed texturing and thoughtful lighting made it possible to capture this dynamic, giving the final render a strong sense of physical believability.
