Diamond Pattern Holes Modeling

What is a good way to model something like this?


I tried modeling it, but when I use the subsurf modifier, it becomes a mess
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I’d play with the bevel settings (if you have angle limit on that might create ngons which are tricky for subsurf sometimes) -

Thanks for the suggestion Dan, I tried a lot of bevel setting combinations, but unfortunately nothing seems to work. Probably the topology of my model isn’t correct.
How did you model that cage-like shape in your gif example?

I tried to make a similar topo than yours for testing:

  • Just made a quad grid,
  • used decimate -> unsundivide -> 1 to spin the faces diagonally,
  • put a solidify mod on,
  • used a bevel mod with no limit method and outer miter set to arch. (angle limit would in this case create those ngons that would screw with the subdiv mod.
