i have brought a new game called DIRT and it is crashing when i launch it…though i have COREduo2 3ghz …nvidia ge-force 8500GT … 1GB memory with 2 swap…240GB hd…

Do you have a DirectX compatible sound card? Apparently, this game needs it… Maybe it was screwed during installation, so you might want to try to remove/reinstall.
Also, the recommended RAM is 2GB. Usually minimum requirements are crap and lies.
