I’m happy to share the trailer for my latest animated short film: DISCOQUEEN!
This is a solo project I’ve been working on for the past year, handling everything from the initial concept to the final render in Blender.
The Story:
Maya is a huge fan of magical girls. One day, she finds a mysterious golden bracelet and realizes that magic is real… and very disco!
Technical details:
Duration: 7:30 minutes
Software: Blender (Eevee) and After Effects
Style: Hybrid 2D/3D look
The film is currently starting its festival run. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the visuals and the overall feel of the project!
This is very good as a whole especially for a solo project.
I think it’s very refreshing to see because it doesn’t have to follow the strict conventions you have to face when dealing with a producer and a broadcaster, therefore you’re more on the artistic side of animation than on the industry side basically !
On the flipside, if we forget that it’s a solo project, it’s maybe missing more polish in many little spots, but it’s very close.
But on the overall it’s fun, there are a lot of interesting things visually, that’s super promising !
What aspect did you enjoyed the most while making it ? Do you want to keep working as a director, art director and therefore hand over some parts to other artists, or do you see yourself working as an artist on some aspects on another’s project ? and in this case what are you the most interested in ?
Or maybe you just like to do everything on your own ?
Anyway, pretty interesting project, I’m sure there is a lot going on and it could be quite interesting to see a bit what’s going on under the hood, so if you have any breakdown or making of to share I’m sure it’s going to be quite interesting !
Thank you so much for the feedback, I really appreciate it! It’s super encouraging.
Looking back, I think I misjudged the scale a bit during the process. I didn’t fully realize at the storyboard stage that I’d end up with so many shots to handle (120 shots in total!). I definitely should have made a slightly shorter film, which would have allowed me to add that extra bit of polish to every single scene. But it was an amazing learning experience!
To answer your question, I loved directing the whole thing, but for future projects, I’d love to focus on art direction, storyboard and compositing within a team and hand over other production steps to specialized artists.
By the way, since you mentioned wanting to see what’s going on under the hood, I’ll be sharing a breakdown of my Blender pipeline right below this post in the coming days. Stay tuned!
This is awesome, and everything you said make a lot of sense !
If you plan to make a breakdown especially if it’s extensive maybe it can be worth a new thread, and you can always reference one in the other. but that depends … I’m sure a lot of people here will find some inspiration for their own stuff and it’s always super interesting to be able to see behind the shoulders of artists !
That makes total sense, thank you! I’ll actually create a brand new thread for the breakdown then, so it’s cleaner and easier to follow. Thanks again for the great advice!
