I am not sure what you are referring to with “eyewet”. Wetness ? I would do that in the material. If you’re using a principled BSDF, it’s just a matter of painting a mask and connecting it to the coat weight socket.

The most amazing eye model if have seen did have indeed the vitreous fluid modeled as a seprate geometry with an extra material.

I would say - 100% yes. Even video games uses saparate meshes for this. As an example - Resident Evil 2 Remake.
