Double Vertices

Yesterday I tried to model something, it turned out ok but as I was trying to continue working today all my vertices had a diagonal edge through them, I find this confusing to work with and would like to be able to turn it off, is there a way to do that?

Do you think it would be useful if you showed us what these diagonal edges actually looked like ?

Maybe you turned on vertex normal display in the properties panel (under Mesh Display while in edit mode)

good idea here you go!, I’ll have a look at what you mentioned in the mean time

How did you save your file ?
You have triangulated each face.

Option 1: select all faces and Ctrl+F / Tris to Quads, then cleanup manually
Option 2: Select all faces and X / Limited Disolve. Change the dissolve angle in the toolshelf or F6 until you get the result you want, then clean up manually
Option 3: Go back to a previous saved file
Option 4: Select two adjacent faces and press F to join them, repeat

Problem solved, thanks a lot

FYI, the terminology you’re using could very well confuse someone in the future, so let me clarify for you the difference between a vertex (singular of vertices) and face, in case it wasn’t just a one time mix up you had above. A vertex is a point, an edge is a line that connects vertices, and a face is the surface that fills in the area between edges. So I would have described what you are seeing as a diagonal line going through your “faces”, not your “vertices”.
