Wondering if anyone is able to help me re basic selection behaviour in Blender. Drag Select vs Click Select. Can Drag Select be made to also Activate the selected object?
I put this screen recording to better articulate the issue.
Wasn’t able to upload here so have linked to YouTube:
i think because with selecting via rectangular box you can select a lot of objects and it’s not perfectly clear which one should be the active one and because of this it just don’t change any active object.
And so it’s best to simply click this one once direclty after the “mass selection”.
For the purposes of basic operations (move/rotate/scale) it makes no difference if objects are selected with drag select or click select. i.e. there is no difference if a Selected object (orange) is Active (yellow) or not. I personally find it more efficient and less strenious to drag select objects and bones / controllers of an armateur. Both when selecting with a mouse or using the tablet pen.
So drag selecting and using G/R/S to Move/Rotate/Scale is an efficient workflow.
However, there is a practical difference between an object that is Active vs Selected. The property panel will only appear for the Active object.
Just a matter of adapting workflow and this behaviour can enhance efficiency in some cases. For example, with the light Active you can then zoom right into the scene and drag select + move objects around in render view while the light properties panel is still active to perfect the light strength.
What would not work is drag select and object, change a property in the panel, drag select another object, change it’s proeprty in the panel, etc. In this case it is better to click select.
