Hello everyone,
I´m mostly a tech guy, but i recently decided do some organic stuff. Humans are a bit boring so i´ve chose a dragon…
I´m pretty satisfied with head, on the other hand, not too sure as regarding body, though it is not complete and back part is only first try. So you are welcome to comment and criticize and sure i´ll be happy for any advices.
For the body, I think one of the large factors hurting it is that the hip and shoulders feel separated from the spine. I think this happens to most people when starting organic modeling. Best advice to fix it is to look at the anatomy of some real animals. I know that a dragon isn’t exactly like any real animal, (my first major organic model was also a dragon) but that doesn’t change that we still expect them to have roughly the same bone/muscle structure. they way they hips and shoulders “wedge” into the body, and unfortunately, getting the correct loop flow is fairly important in how easy it is to make that look correct when box modeling.
my tip, pick a dragon style and push it more that way. this is a gross over simplification to those that know dragons, but:
western dragons are much broader in the main body, similar to a lizard, so you’d need to expand the chest and belly to match the current legs.
where as eastern dragon are much more like a snake with limbs, to do that you should pull the legs in and down, so that the spine will be by far the highest point on the back.
I’m not saying you can’t make the current proportions work if you want ether, it’s just going to look very bony and you’ll need to do research on a lot more anatomy to make it convincing. but I think traveling a more common look might be good idea if you’re new to organic still, as that will give you more references to work from, as well as make it easier to sell to the viewer what’s happing (as in shapes) as they will be inherently more familiar with the subject.
only other thought is an echo to what Khell voiced concern for; that the chin looks a bit artificial with such a hard uninterrupted line to it’s profile. it looks good everywhere else up there.
It’s looking good. I’m looking forward to seeing the wings (and later the whole dragon) complete. Are you going to add a bone structure and animate it or are you just concentrating on the modelling at the moment?
