Dragonfly Drone Takeoff

Thought I’d do a quick piece with the dead dragonfly bot from my EMP artwork. I reworked the wings, rigged the legs, and did some other minor texture updates.

The dragonfly was modeled and animated with Blender and textured with Substance 3D Painter. Rendered with Cycles.

The branch is from Poly Haven. It is “Dry Branches Medium 01” by Rico Cilliers. The plants are from Botaniq.

Adding a link to the animation in case there are problems viewing it here.

Hey Ozyris,

The animation is playing for me. I added a link to the animation at the end of the project description, if you are still unable to view it.

WOW…this is awesome work :star_struck:
I love this kind of machine/nature art.

I would be very interested what method you used to construct the dragonfly.
Thanks

Thanks!

I basically just start with simple geometry and use a bunch of reference. The dragonfly tail, for example, was just 2 long cylinders to start. I then start refining, trying to make some interesting shapes that make sense for the model. A lot of extruding faces, booleans, and a lot of trial and error. Sometimes it’s a bit of a struggle. I do find if I do some quick sketches as I go along it helps. I’ll do screen grabs, take them into Procreate and do some draw overs. Very rough, but it helps me figure out the design.

For this piece, the wings were challenging. I wanted propellers like a drone would have, but I also wanted them to look somewhat like dragonfly wings. I did have to compromise on these, since they couldn’t really be symmetrical like insect wings would be, or as fragile. But I minimized the problem with the animation and the camera angle at the beginning helps hide the problem a little.

Looks amazing. The small ladybug down at the branch makes the scene more realistic.
